Surrey’s $27.5-million stadium is now officially open.
The city celebrated the completion of the 2,200-seat Bear Creek Stadium with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday.

Mayor Brenda Locke believes it will bring more high-profile events to the city.
“There is no question about it, that a stadium like this will be attracting other groups to come and hold their games here,” said Locke.
“We’ve had some people starting to inquire already… we know that it’s going to be a huge, huge benefit to the city.”

The track and field at Bear Creek Park, the city says, has hosted countless sporting events since the 1950s. Soon, it may be able to host another echelon of athletics.
“Pending Class 2 Facility Certification, Bear Creek Stadium will be eligible to host high-profile events, including World Athletics Continental Tour Gold and Silver events, Bronze-level meets, and Challenger Series events,” said a City of Surrey news release.
It adds that the stadium will support provincial and regional events for organizations such as BC Athletics and BC School Sports.
Amenities built up around the new stadium also include a new plaza, utility connections for food trucks, and a concession and ticket booth that can be adapted to accommodate many uses.
“This facility truly reflects our values of inclusion and excellence,” said Locke.
In May, Locke revealed more details about the city’s plan to build a 10,000-seat sports arena downtown, for which she expects construction to begin in 2027.
