Evacuation ordered, lifted in same day after Vernon fire

Residents of Vernon were subject to dramatic turns Sunday after a wildfire broke out south of the Okanagan city.

The Boltres Creek fire, discovered Aug. 17, prompted an evacuation order for approximately 20 properties and the closure of Highway 97.

But both were short-lived as the City of Vernon announced the order had been lifted later the same day, and the highway reopened.

“The Boltres Creek Wildfire is stable and no longer showing growth. Those who have been tactically evacuated are safe to return home,” said the city.

The BC Wildfire Service says it is currently being held at 103 hectares.

The service says 79 wildfires are currently burning in B.C.

The only wildfire of note, the Mount Underwood fire on Vancouver Island, has grown to more than 36 square kilometres and is still considered out of control.
