Fatal multi-vehicle crash closes Highway 1 westbound into Surrey

One person is dead and westbound traffic on Highway 1 between Langley and Surrey is blocked Monday after a crash east of Pacific Highway (176 Street, or Highway 15).

The BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) says it was called to the scene of the three-vehicle crash around 7:15 a.m.

Images from the scene show a massive emergency crew response surrounding the damaged vehicles and scattered debris.

Brian Twaites with BC Emergency Health Services says paramedics transported two patients to hospital.

“One in stable condition, one in serious condition,” said Twaites.

In an update after 9:30 a.m., the BCHP confirmed that one person had died as a result of the crash.

Mounties describe the collision as “head-on,” adding that investigators believe one of the drivers crossed over from an eastbound lane.

“This collision was immediately and obviously serious, and that caused a complete shutdown of the highway,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

Callers to 1130 NewsRadio reported being diverted by emergency crews at 200 Street in Langley Monday morning.

As of 1 p.m., Highway 1 remained closed to westbound traffic. The 192 Street and 176 Street on-ramps were also closed.

Drivers are advised to take Highway 17 to avoid congestion, but delays are expected in the area.

The BCHP is asking witnesses to the crash to call its Burnaby office at 604-526-9744 and quote file (1003) 2025-4185.
