Mount Pleasant’s construction chaos goes beyond Broadway closure

Less than a few into a road closure of Broadway for the Subway Project – neighbours are feeling the frustration and worry as traffic flows it’s way onto once quiet side streets. Joe Sadowski reports.

It has been nearly two weeks since the closure of Broadway between Main and Quebec streets for construction of the Broadway Subway, but that is far from the only roadwork in the neighbourhood.

There is a long list of other projects going on in the area that are causing headaches for locals.

Some of these include sewer work in several areas:

  • From West 2nd to Cambie;
  • Between West 2nd and Columbia;
  • West 7th between Yukon and Alberta, which will be closed until March; and
  • Quebec between Terminal and East 1st — which will last about three months.

All of this is leaving Neil Wyles with the Mount Pleasant Business Improvement Association wondering how people are supposed to get around.

“There is an incredible amount happening, if you have your finger on the pulse of what’s going on in the neighbourhood,” Wyles said.

“The neighbours aren’t happy with the amount of traffic.”

He says cyclists are also frustrated with people speeding down 10th Avenue — which is a bike route — and he says he’s seeing people getting increasingly annoyed on the road, running stop lights, and making wild turns down alleys.

As Alex Carrigan in the 1130 NewsRadio Traffic Centre reminds us, that’s just going to make things worse.

“When crashes do happen at these choke points, it makes it so much worse, because traffic needs to go so much farther away to avoid these points,” he said.

Meanwhile, the City of Vancouver says the Columbia Sewer Repair project is time-sensitive and can’t be postponed.
