“I want to thank the leadership at the local level — Mayor Darryl [Krakowka] and his team,” Eby told reporters.

“They’ve always been huge champions for this community, and they will continue to be so.”

Nina Krieger, B.C.’s Minister of Public Safety, says that police showed bravery when responding quickly to the calls heading to the school and saving many with their swift actions.

She also praised the town residents for their compassion for one another.

“When the worst, when the unthinkable unfolded, we also see the very best in people, compassion and professionalism in the face of horror,” Krieger said.

Mayor Krakowka used the opportunity to thank the province and the feds for having taken action to support his town within a day.

“We are one big family, we are going to need the support. And, reaching out to government after yesterday’s big tragedy, I said, We are going to need councillors, boots on the ground tonight or tomorrow,'” Krakowka said.

“I can’t thank the government enough for the quick action to get counsellors on the ground with working with their agencies. It is so important when we see a tragedy like this.”

Krakowka also says that the people of Tumbler Ridge need space not to grieve and mourn.

“Feel free to offer a hug, and then you might get a conversation going that helps you with your story,” he said, addressing reporters.

Eby confirmed that counsellors from Northern Health were dispatched Tuesday night.

He adds that 13 clinical workers are in Tumbler Ridge now.

Additonally, Mayor Krakowka says that B.C. Emergency Health Services has sent seven ambulances to the town.

When asked about the shooting suspect’s prior interactions with police and the health-care system, Eby said the matter is being investigated by police, but promised to deliver answers to the community’s questions as soon as possible.
