The City of Vancouver has decided to discontinue handing out “cool kits” that were meant to help vulnerable populations stay cool during extreme heats.
First started by the City in 2022, the aim of the program was to help those vulnerable to both the effects of heat and pollution due to wildfires. The kits were first distributed to community organizations who would then supply them to those in need.

Now, the City has resources on its website that include things for staying cool in the hot weather and for ideas on how to protect yourself from wildfire smoke.
These resources may not be available to vulnerable populations as it means going online to access the information.
The City of Vancouver stated to 1130 News Radio that it “prioritizes the safety of all residents and has assessed the most effective use of resources for heat mitigation during summer months. By ensuring access to a variety of civic facilities over the summer, developing robust information campaigns and sharing proactive tips and measures to stay cool at home, the City is able to maximize impact across the city.”
The City has decided to redirect people to resources such as community-centred options for the public by activating and promoting civic facilities as cooling centres during heat events.
It has also installed water, misters, and other cooling infrastructure throughout the city.
“While the City is no longer directly distributing kits with personal household items through community organizations, the City will continue to provide robust information and practical guidance on preparing for hot weather, staying cool at home, and creating cool kits and DIY air cleaners.”
