Olympic ‘Shiprider’ program secures waterways on U.S and Canadian coasts

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Stepped up Olympic enforcement on the ground, in the air…and also on the water.  An Olympic “Shiprider” pilot project will be patrolling cross-border waterways during the Winter Games.

Sergeant Duncan Pound with the Federal Border Integrity Program says it has been designed to bolster cross-border security in the waters of Puget Sound and off the Pacific Coast.  “The key to this program  is to have specially designated crews and specially designated vessels, where we can have U.S Coast Guard and RCMP crews.  And what the program allows us to do, is to allow our vessels and U.S. Coast Guard vessels  to enter into Canadian and U.S. waters without having to be deterred by maritime borders.”

Sergeant Pound also says the project allows RCMP and the U.S. Coast Guard to cross-train and share resources.
