Local businessman is new owner of BC Lions CFL team

The B.C. Lions welcomed local entrepreneur Amar Doman as their new owner on Wednesday. Kier Junos speaks with Sportsnet650’s Scott Rintoul about what this move means for the team, in a league already struggling financially.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The BC Lions CFL team has a new owner, and he’s local.

Amar Doman is the founder of Futura Corporation. He has been in the lumber and construction industry for decades.

The BC Lions describe Doman as an entrepreneur “known for his business acumen and talent for seeing the big picture.”

“I’m thrilled and excited by the opportunity before us, to build a winning team on the field, to be a positive force for a better British Columbia off the field, and to provide a great experience for our fans and our partners every step of the journey,” Doman said, adding the team is “part of the fabric of this great province.”

The franchise has been trying to find a new owner after David Braley passed away last year. Braley bought the team prior to the 1997 season, and the BC Lions won three Grey Cups (2000, 2006, and 2011) under his ownership.

“Amar Doman is exactly the owner that David Braley wanted for the future of the BC Lions, a team he was proud to own and that he deeply loved,” said Grant Panchyson, executor of Braley’s estate.

Doman was formerly a director on the national board of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

The Lions’ shortened season is now underway.
