VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — While you may be visiting with a few more people for Thanksgiving this year compared to last, many vulnerable people don’t have that option. The Union Gospel Mission will be giving out hundreds of pounds of food throughout the weekend to those experiencing homelessness and poverty.
For Nadia Tchoumi, media relations manager, it’s the mission’s second pandemic Thanksgiving complete with COVID-19 protocols.
“We know that it’s been tough for folks, so we’re actually looking forward to this day, and just connecting with folks.”

Tchoumi says they would normally have over 100 volunteers lending a hand at this time of year, but they have to keep things light due to COVID restrictions.
“You’re going to see a handful, just a few volunteers here on-site, serving dinner through the door.”
The meals, which include turkey, vegetables, potatoes, and gravy, will be served takeout style to follow health guidelines. The mission will also be handing out goodie bags with dry socks and other essentials.
Tchoumi says the turkey dinner tradition is a really important time of the year.
“Look at these key moments throughout the year, when folks are usually with their families, and usually have friends, but in this community, we know that there are a lot of people who struggle with isolation, and not having someone at this time of year,” she said.
Service gets underway Saturday, and runs throughout the weekend.
“We’re really looking forward to that day when we can have everyone back inside the dining halls.”
