Two Vancouver transit stations closed after ‘suspicious package’ found

A suspicious package that forced the closure of two Canada Line stations earlier this week did not pose a danger, police say.
Marine Drive Station in South Vancouver was closed and nearby businesses were evacuated after the item was spotted Tuesday evening. The Langara-49th Avenue Station was also closed to allow police to work.
According to Metro Vancouver Transit Police, officers were called to the Canada Line station around 7:30 p.m.
“Out of an abundance of caution the station and surrounding businesses were evacuated while our officers investigate,” says a statement from a spokesperson.

In a follow up email, Transit Police tell CityNews the “suspicious item was safely retrieved and its contents determined to be inert.”
The closure of both stations was necessary, police say, due to their power systems.
“Due to the way the Canada Line tracks are constructed, in order to power down Marine Drive Station, it is required to also power down Langara-49th Station. This was done so that The Vancouver Police Department EDU could safely investigate,” an email reads.
The Marine Drive and Langara-49th Avenue stations reopened by Wednesday morning.
