4 people released from hospital after West Vancouver highway collision

Four of the six people hospitalized after Wednesday’s horrible collision on the Upper Levels Highway in West Vancouver have now been released.

According to West Vancouver Police Department, one of the two people still in hospital is the driver of the motorhome which was reportedly driving against traffic.

Of the two in hospital, one is in critical condition, with the other in stable condition, however, police will not confirm the condition of the motorhome driver.

The crash occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Highway 1 between Westmount Road and 21st Street, and closed the highway until about 7:30 p.m.

Given the motorhome was reportedly driving against traffic, there has been much speculation as to whether the driving behaviour was intentional or not. Police could not comment on the driver’s motivation.

“It’s so early on in the investigation, we can’t speculate as to why or how it may have happened, or the motive behind it,” Const. Nicole Braithwaite of WVPD told CityNews. “At this time, we’re just combing through the evidence, we’re combing through witness statements, and we will be examining the vehicle.”

Darren Grieve, who has been in the CityNews Air Patrol for several years, says Wednesday’s crash was one of the worst he’s ever seen.

“It was on my mind for most of the evening. I don’t think I’ve seen a crash with that much damage to the vehicles involved — to the point where you’ve got two and three and four vehicles all in a big pile there and you really couldn’t tell one from the other. Never seen it before. Eight years I’ve been doing this, never seen it,” he said.

If you have information or dashcam footage that can help with the investigation, West Vancouver police are asking you to contact them.
