In honour of a former Golden Girl, The BC SPCA is bringing back an online fundraising challenge aimed at helping animals in need.
It all began last year, in honour of Betty White and her love for animals. Her fans began donating $5 to charities of their choice in an effort to help animals in need.
The fundraising challenge has already begun, and runs until White’s birthday on Jan. 17. She would’ve been 101.
Eileen Drever with the B.C. SPCA launched the fundraiser for a second year in a row after receiving requests from donors. Drevers says the legacy White left behind is a major driver behind the fundraising challenge.
“What a legacy this lady has left behind for animals in North America…donors requested we do this again, so we’re happy to do that and here we go again for another year,” said Drever.

She adds that this year’s fundraiser will also help out a young pup, an English Bulldog mix, who was found in Richmond suffering from severe and horrifying injuries and unable to walk.
“Her skin was enflamed, she was shivering and she was exhausted, her abdomen was hard and swollen,” Drever explained. “We’ve named her after Betty White. We’ve called her GG, her name is Golden Girl.”
The money raised also helps cruelty investigations, and seized animals that are taken in to care.
Drever says you can donate to any reputable charity but those who donate to the B.C. SPCA will get a Betty White sticker. Last year’s rendition of the fundraiser raised over $400,000.
