Open fire ban issued for much of B.C.

You won’t be able to have a campfire in much of B.C. as of noon on Thursday, as the BC Wildfire Service says an open fire ban has been issued.

A Category 1 burn prohibition will be in place for the Coastal Fire Centre, the Kamloops Fire Centre, the Cariboo Fire Centre, and the Prince George Fire Centre starting on June 8.

Along with campfires, fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels and tiki torches, and chimineas also fall under the ban.

“Most of the Coastal Fire Centre is in a moderate to high fire danger rating. We’ve seen the forest fire fuels drying out and they will continue to dry out until we see a significant amount of rainfall,” Fire Information Officer Kimberly Kelly with the Coastal Fire Centre explained.

“These indices have brought us to enact a campfire band that will be coming into place at noon Pacific Daylight Time on Thursday, June 8.”

This comes as multiple wildfires continue to rage in the province, and more hot weather is on the way.
