A man who stole a running, unlocked vehicle in Surrey earlier this month has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property, Mounties say.
The charges come after Surrey RCMP officers received a report of a vehicle being stolen from 93A Avenue near 121 Street on June 5. Police say the owner had left the vehicle running while they went back into their home.
The following day, officers spotted the stolen vehicle just a block away, along 93A Avenue and 122 Street.
“Officers followed the vehicle to Holland Park where two males exited the vehicle and were taken into custody. The passenger of the vehicle had outstanding warrants out of Delta and Surrey. Both males were transported to Surrey RCMP cells and held in custody to be brought before the courts,” police said in a statement Tuesday.
The alleged driver, 24-year-old Mohammed M Sufi Gaandi, has been charged and subsequently released with conditions while he awaits trial.
With three recent reports of unoccupied running vehicles being stolen in Surrey, this is a good time to remind drivers to never leave vehicles unlocked and running even if only for a short period of time,
said Surrey RCMP Sgt. Jordan Davies.
Don’t give criminals an easy opportunity to steal your vehicle; always ensure your vehicle is turned off and locked prior to leaving it unattended.
Gaandi’s first court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
