Charge laid in downtown New West stabbing

A man is facing an assault charge after a stabbing inside a downtown New Westminster apartment on Thursday.

According to the New Westminster Police Department (NWPD), Wael Elkady was arrested on the evening of the stabbing and charged with aggravated assault.

Investigators say the victim and suspect knew each other. The man remains in custody.

Police say the incident happened just after noon at an apartment on Carnarvon Street near 4th Street. A woman was taken to the hospital after officers provided “life-saving aid.”

In an email to CityNews, NWPD confirms the woman is in serious but stable condition after being treated for multiple stab wounds. She is expected to survive.

Police say the investigation is still ongoing, with detectives working to speak with witnesses and gather evidence.
