Wind warnings remain for Sunshine Coast, parts of Vancouver Island

High winds are expected across the Sunshine Coast and parts of Vancouver Island as another storm system makes its way across the region Wednesday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a wind warning, which covers exposed coastal sections of Victoria, Nanoose Bay to Campbell River, and the Sunshine Coast. The warning is in place from the morning through to Wednesday evening.

“Another strong frontal system is approaching the B.C. coast. Southeast winds of 70 km/h with gusts to 90 km/h will develop over exposed coastal sections of Victoria late this morning and then build into the northern Strait of Georgia by early afternoon,” the agency said in its alert.

“Winds are forecast to subside below warning criteria late this evening.”

ECCC is warning that wind could result in some damage to buildings, such as on roofs and windows.

“High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break. High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches,” it added.

Thousands of people were without power on Christmas and Boxing Day after strong winds swept across the South Coast.

Nearly 13,000 customers across the Lower Mainland and the Sunshine Coast experienced outages, though most saw their service restored by Tuesday around noon, according to BC Hydro.

The vast majority of issues were caused by trees falling across wires, BC Hydro added.

On Friday, ECCC said a series of “very strong storms” was set to hit the province’s coast early this week and issued wind warnings going into the holiday long weekend.
