Section of Highway 99 closing overnight Friday

Heads up to anyone planning on taking Highway 99 overnight Friday: a section of the highway will be closing at the Steveston Interchange in both directions.

The closure, which will allow crews to move heavy machinery across the highway for work relating to the Steveston Interchange Project, is scheduled to start at 11 p.m. Friday and last until 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

Traffic will be detoured off the highway using the Steveston offramp. The closure may include some short-term traffic stoppages.

Emergency responders will still have access through the stretch.

The Steveston Interchange Project is a part of the Highway 99 Tunnel Program, according to the provincial government project overview.

“As part of the broader program, the new Steveston Interchange will improve connections for vehicles, transit users, pedestrians and cyclists,” the overview said.

“Opening in 2025, the modernized interchange will provide more vehicle lanes, improve transit operations, and include sidewalks and cycling lanes on both sides of the structure for the first time.”

The project will see the replacement of the current interchange at Highway 99 and Steveston Highway with a five-lane structure.

The total project cost is estimated at around $87.5 million, and it is expected to be completed in 2025.
