Police say a man is facing charges related to a deadly crash in Vancouver’s downtown last year.
On June 22, 2023, a 28-year-old man died after a serious collision in downtown Vancouver Thursday morning.
The Vancouver Police Department says a blue Honda Accord was stopped at a red light on West Georgia and Burrard streets around 3 a.m. when the driver of a white Plymouth Voyager drove into the back of the Honda.
Police say the mini-van caught on fire, and the driver had to be “extracted” from the vehicle. The driver and one passenger of the Honda were seriously hurt and taken to hospital.
The second passenger died from his injuries at the scene, the VPD said.
After more than a year-long investigation, the B.C. Prosecution Service approved the following charges against 35-year-old Steven Austin Trakalo:
- One count of criminal negligence causing death
- Two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm
- One count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death
- Two counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm
Police say Trakalo was arrested in Chilliwack last week, and has since been released.
