Surrey’s Kap’s Café reopens after two shootings

A café in Surrey linked to Bollywood star Kapil Sharma reopened Wednesday after being the target of gunfire twice over the summer.

Kap’s Café — named for its owner and prominent Indian comedian and television host — has replaced the damaged windows and reopened its doors on 120 Street and 85 Avenue.

Bullets struck those windows while employees were inside on July 10 — a week after it originally opened — and then again less than a month later on Aug. 7. No one was physically injured in either shooting.

In the Aug. 7 incident, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) also discovered what looked like a Molotov cocktail outside.

Images from the scene showed what appears to be a glass bottle, full of liquid, with a rag hanging from the top.

The café’s operators posted to social media Wednesday, announcing it would be open again from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

An SPS vehicle and mobile CCTV station were positioned outside the café.

“There’s been a team of officers assigned to that case since the July 10 shooting. They have been working on completing a number of priority tasks. That includes going through witness statements, a fair bit of CCTV footage, but there is no investigative update in terms of suspects identified or arrest been made,” SPS Staff Sergeant Lindsey Houghton told 1130 NewsRadio over the summer.

The motive for both shootings remains unclear in October, and police have not announced any related arrests.

Both shootings are among the most high-profile possible extortion cases being investigated by the SPS.

Concern has been growing for months within Surrey’s South Asian community, with 48 reports of the crime made as of Sept. 22. Twenty-nine shots-fired calls related to extortion. The threats face both businesses and people.

Last month, Surrey’s mayor announced that the city had set aside a $250,000 reward fund for information leading to convictions.

Anyone with information about possible extortion crimes is asked to call the SPS non-emergency line at 604-599-0522 and quote file number 25-66351 or call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
