Frigid temperatures expected to stay all week

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Brrrr…it’s cold out there. Maybe not cold by Prairie standards, but still quite cold for Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. And there’s no warm up in the forecast until the weekend at the earliest, so people who work and play outdoors need to keep bundling up to fight the cold.
Transit workers, city crews, maintenance and construction workers are traditionally a hardy bunch, dealing with whatever weather gets thrown at us. This week, it means dealing with high temperatures of just zero today, and minus 1 for most of this week. But overnight lows could drop to minus 7, with windchills of minus 15 in the Fraser Valley. One outside worker we spoke with tried to look on the bright side. “It’s not bad. It could be worse…it’s not raining!” Or snowing, like Calgary and Edmonton.
For others bundled up to catch a bus or SkyTrain, the bright sunshine is a welcome sight, even with the cold. They obviously remember November, when the sun was a rare sight and it rained for days on end. However, there is a chance of snow flurries later in the week.
For those less fortunate, the cold is not just an inconvenience, it’s dangerous. Extreme weather measures are in place in many Lower Mainland communities, with several hundred extra beds opening over the weekend at shelters, churches, and community centres.
