Port Coquitlam townhouse fire leaves one dead

PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – A fire at a townhouse complex in Port Coquitlam this morning has left one person dead.  The fire started at about 3:30 on Suffolk Avenue, just north of the Lougheed Highway.

RCMP Inspector Al Rainey says a 55-year-old woman died at the scene.  Her son has actually identified the body which now lies underneath a blue tarp on the street.  You can’t actually see the fire scene from the street, as it’s in a back apartment.  Extensive smoke damage in the building forced the 45 residents to be taken to the local fire hall.

RCMP and Port Coquitlam Fire are still investigating and it’s going to take some time to figure out what exactly happened.  The B.C. Coroner’s Service is also on scene. : Mounties now say it appears the fire was accidental and may have been smoking-related.
