Expect long lines at nightclubs during Games

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Expect to wait longer and pay more to experience Vancouver’s nightlife when the 2010 Games begin.  Pubs, clubs and bars have big plans in place to get more bodies on the dance floor.  Some bars are undertaking major renovations or running with longer hours while others are bringing in some big-name DJs to woo partiers inside.

Tanya Richards with Granville Entertainment Group, which operates The Roxy, The Cellar and Doolin’s Irish Pub, says cover charges won’t be larger than you’re used to.  “We’re not going over $20, which is basically what every other nightclub is right now.  I’m not sure what their plans are during the Games, but we’re going to $20 in The Cellar and in The Roxy every day of the week.  We’re not changing on weekends.”

Eddie Emerman, owner of the Blarney Stone in Gastown, says the Olympics presented a perfect opportunity to start major renovations.  “We ripped off the whole front of the building and we put in a sliding door system so the whole front of the building opens onto the street.”

The Donnelly Group, which operates Republic, Library Square Pub and Bar None among others, is expecting longer lines earlier outside their bars and nightclubs.  Wherever you go, most club operators News1130 has been speaking with are banking on big crowds, so be prepared to wait your turn to get inside.
