VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s been almost one year since a devastating earthquake rocked Haiti and killed more than 220,000 people. And now, Doctors Without Borders has released a review detailing its response efforts.
It was the largest humanitarian response in the group’s 40-year history.
Dr. Unni Karunakara says the Haitian people showed extraordinary resilience and the doctors on the ground in Haiti managed to prioritize medical care. “During the emergency phase, emergency response was prioritized. That’s where our expertise lies. We were stretched at times, but I think we were able to do what was needed.”
He adds the review was necessary to learn from mistakes and to improve response for large scale disasters in the future.
