Fire at Watkins Mill

RUSKIN (NEWS1130) – Two buildings have been destroyed following a huge fire at a sawmill in Ruskin, near Mission.

It took several hours for fire crews to get the blaze at the Watkins Mill under control.  Shortly after 8 a.m., thick black smoke and flames could be scene shooting from the roof of one of the buildings.

“The whole building is engulfed,” says Susan, who called our newsroom when she spotted the fire. “It’s massive… It’s probably not going to be salvageable.”

We asked her how high the flames were. “I’d say about four feet above the roof of the building. You can see the smoke all the way out to Mission.”

Monisha Martins with the Maple Ridge News says luckily nobody was hurt.

“Flames were shooting up into the sky at least two storeys high. No one was injured, because the building was shut down for the day.  Nobody was working. They ended up calling firehalls from Maple Ridge, Mission, the North Fraser District and Abbotsford,” she points out.
