DeRo is the hero for Canada on the pitch

TORONTO, ON (NEWS1130) – Veteran Dwayne DeRosario scored off of a quick free kick by Atiba Hutchinson in the 77th minute to give Canada a 1-0 win over Panama in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying soccer.

After Amilcar Henriquez of Panama fouled Canada’s Simeon Jackson on the right wing just outside the 18-yard box, the Panamanians started complaining to the referee. Hutchinson alertly took the free kick and DeRosario was wide open in the middle of the six-yard box and easily right footed the cross into the wide open goal.

The goal was DeRo’s 20th for his country, setting a men’s national team mark as he passed Coquitlam’s Dale Mitchell who had 19 goals for Canada.

Roman Torres just missed the net for the visitors in the 84th minute.

Canada now leads Group “C”  with seven points, which is one better than Panama. The two countries will meet again on Tuesday in Panama City.
