SURREY (NEWS1130) – Your morning commute may look a little different if you travel along Highway 1 today.
There was no champagne, no ribbon cutting, no ceremony — but this morning, eastbound traffic was rerouted from the old to the new Port Mann Bridge.
Max Logan with the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project was on the bridge deck this morning monitoring traffic. He says so far so good.
“Overnight crews moved barriers, painted lines around 4:30 or 5 this morning. We have a full three lanes moved off the old Port Mann Bridge on to the new Port Mann Bridge,” he explains. “It’s a really exciting milestone for the project this morning.”

News1130’s Mike Lloyd drove over the bridge a couple of times this morning.
“[It was a] nice smooth drive over the bridge eastbound and it wasn’t even that confusing! [There are] quite a few signs, quite a few orange markers showing you where to go.”
Shifting over the three eastbound lanes is the first stage in opening the new bridge. Until December, westbound traffic will remain on the old bridge.
Eight lanes will open in December and that’s when tolls are expected to kick in.
A total of 10 lanes will be open in 2013.
For the next two weekends, the Port Mann Bridge will be down to one lane in each direction. The News1130 Air Patrol will be in the air, helping you with your commute.
