LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – They may have been out there, but callers to News1130 this morning didn’t spot many road crews out clearing the snow yesterday
Yesterday, Meteorologist Russ Lacate predicted more snowfall overnight, so will the commute be a tough one again?
Coquitlam, Burnaby, Surrey and New Westminster are all planning to be out working around the clock to make sure roads are in good shape morning.
“We’ll be running full crews through the night ,” says Brian Carter with the City of Burnaby.
“We’re going to be running 24 hours around the clock with crews working 12 hour shifts alternating until the end of the event which will be at least tomorrow mid-day,” says Dan Mooney with the City of Coquitlam.
In Surrey, crews started preparing at 4 p.m. yesterday, getting ready for today.
“That shift will run until 4 a.m. and then another shift will come in at 4 a.m. and we’ll deal with the event until it’s all cleared up,” says Ray Kerr with the City of Surrey.
There were also some noticeable transit delays yesterday. Derek Zabel with TransLink says there are some areas you’ll want to watch out for. ” If you’re heading up to SFU watch out for that area, also the south slopes in Vancouver can be a bit of a challenge.”
He says despite some suggestions, adding extra busses isn’t an option as it would just cause more congestion.

Yesterday morning was a mess
Many commuters were very late for work yesterday due to snow and ice making things difficult, and people not knowing how to drive in the winter conditions made everything even worse.
Cue the jack-knifed semi’s and roll over accidents, causing an infuriating situation especially for the drivers stuck on the roads for two to three hours longer than normal.
One caller said trucks were slowing things down. “On the Queensborough Bridge, there is a truck stuck on the bridge trying to get over and I’ve been stuck for two hours.”
There were problems all over the Lower Mainland. “I’m on the South Fraser Perimeter Road and it is gridlock”
The Alex Fraser was a mess, the Patullo was also a nightmare, Rob says he actually parked the car and started walking to work.
“I figured I’ve got to get to school to teach my students so here I am, literally… walking to school. I live normally in Abbotsford, I am walking in from half way up Peterson Hill.”
