NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) A 22-year-old man has been charged in what police say was a brutal random attack which left a grandmother dead.
Julien Levasseur has been charged with second-degree murder.
IHIT hasn’t released any details about how the woman was killed, but it happened Wednesday on the sidewalk on 8th Avenue near 15th Street in New Westminster.
There were plenty of witnesses, including students of Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary. The woman killed is a grandmother to a student at that school.
School District Superintendent John Gaiptman says they’ve brought in some extra support for kids traumatized by what happened.
“We are working with New Westminster Mental Health. We have special counsellors that have come in to work with our students, parents, and with our community in order to ensure that everybody is getting the support that they need.”
At last word, RCMP were still hoping to speak with the driver of a van or SUV that hit the suspect as he was getting away. They’re looking for any addition info this person could provide.
