NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Handsworth Secondary in North Vancouver has been evacuated after a student reportedly brought a small explosive device into the school.

No one was hurt, and police have wrapped up their search of the school.

Deneka Michaud with the school board says the school was evacuated around 12:30 as a precaution.

“Earlier in the day it came to the attention of school administration that a student brought a small explosive device to school. No threats were made, and the device was quickly seized,” says Michaud.

Police are not commenting on what sort of device was found, but say a sweep of the building didn’t reveal any more explosives.

The school’s website displays this updated statement:

“All school events planned for tonight at the school are cancelled. The band concert scheduled at Highlands United Church tonight is postponed. Tomorrow morning (March 1), exterior doors to the school will be opened at 8:20 a.m. and students will report to period 7 class at 8:30 a.m. to collect their belongings.

The lockdown drill and earthquake simulation planned for innovation time tomorrow will be postponed. An alternate schedule for tomorrow will be emailed home later tonight.”

The school says students will not be able to access their lockers while the RCMP investigate, and it appreciates student, staff and parent cooperation.

Classes are expected to be back in session tomorrow.
