Snow finally arriving at some local mountains

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Winter weather is really setting in on the local mountains. NEWS 1130 meteorologist Russ Lacate says it hasn’t been cold enough for snow, but that’s changing.

Whistler Blackcomb opens today. Russ is predicting between 10 and 15 centimetres will fall on the slopes there today, tonight, and tomorrow.

“The freezing level is beginning to fall over the local mountains, too,” Russ adds. “I would anticipate showers changing over to flurries for the peaks of the North Shore mountains later today, adding to that much-needed snowpack on Friday, too.”

Grouse Mountain isn’t open yet, but Julia Grant with the mountain says the start of the season there has been earlier than usual the last couple of years.

“We’re sort of right in the ballpark of when we normally open. It’s not uncommon to [open] late November, early December.”

She says once they start seeing some snow accumulations, the mountain is usually able to open quickly.
