Vancouver’s Trump hotel closes permanently: reports

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The Trump International Hotel and Tower Vancouver, which closed earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has shut down permanently.
The company behind it has filed for bankruptcy, according to reports.
The developer of the Trump hotel has refused to return calls, but NEWS 1130 tried to book a room online and was told the facility is temporarily closed until the end of September.
“We would like to inform you that health officials in Vancouver have ordered the temporary closure of hotel and spa operations in Vancouver to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Effective immediately, Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver will be closed until further notice,” says a post on the hotel’s website.
A sign on the front door of the hotel’s restaurant says Mott 32 is also temporarily closed.
“We will be back soon,” says a post on its Instagram account. “Apologies to our guests who had existing reservations — we will be in touch to rearrange your booking in due course. Please check back here for updates on our reopening. Thank you.”

The hotel may not be closed for long, though.
The Four Seasons has been looking for an opportunity to get back in the market, other reports suggest.
The Trump International Hotel and Tower opened on W. Georgia St. in Vancouver in February 2017.
An anti-Trump rally coincided with the tower’s opening.
Prior to that, the hotel developer sued its contractors for shoddy construction and management, which it claimed delayed the project.
Court documents showed Holborn Developments (West Georgia) Ltd. filed a notice of civil claim in BC Supreme Court on Jan. 17, 2017 against Urban One Construction Management Inc.

The luxury hotel and condominium building was supposed to open the previous summer, but construction delays pushed back the opening date twice.
Holborn was asking for unspecific damages for breach of contract, negligence, and construction delays.
Holborn, according to its website, developed the Vancouver tower that bears the Trump name in partnership with TA Global Berhad.
“Holborn has positioned itself as the city’s premiere luxury real estate developer by setting record breaking sales and bringing global renown entertainment operator Drai’s and Mott 32, award-winning Chinese fine dining restaurant from Hong Kong.”
Donald Trump, who accepted the Republican nomination Thursday to seek re-election as president, visited the Vancouver hotel in February 2017.
