New Patullo Bridge name should celebrate diversity: Chinese-Canadian veteran

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) — The problematic history of a former B.C. premier has inspired calls for the new Pattullo Bridge to have a different name.

Thomas Pattullo — who was premier of B.C. when the current crossing opened in 1937 — actively lobbied the federal government to bar those of Asian descent from joining the Canadian military, arguing it would lead to them getting to vote.

King Wan, with Pacific Unit 280, a Vancouver-based Chinese-Canadian veterans group, said Thursday a new crossing offers the chance for change, and he’s already getting some support.

“I know for a fact that MLA George Chow has also voiced the fact that he is in support of a new name when the new bridge is built,” Wan said.

Construction of the $1.4 billion replacement crossing between New Westminster and Surrey is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2023. The new bridge will have four lanes, although the Surrey Board of Trade previously said more are needed.

The name of the Pattullo Bridge replacement hasn’t been selected yet.

Wan is asking for a name that better reflects and celebrates the diversity of this region.

“With so many diverse cultures and ethnicities in the city, we should really consider more prominent citizens of all backgrounds.”

The existing Patullo Bridge — long criticized as being dangerous due to its narrow lanes — will remain in operation until the new crossing opens.

The latter will have wider lanes, with the capability to expand to six, according to the province.
