Suspicious package closes Metrotown Skytrain Station Saturday

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) — Metrotown SkyTrain Station was closed temporarily Saturday after a suspicious package was reported.

Just after 4 p.m., TransLink announced the Expo Line Metrotown Station was closed due to a “police incident.”

Transit Police Media Relations Officer Clint Hampton says the station and ajoining bus loop were shut down for about half an hour.

“That was out of a report of a suspicious package in the area of Metrotown SkyTrain Station,” he says. “We were able to use our canine our explosive dogs to determine that the package wasn’t anything to be concerned of and we were able to get the SkyTrain and buses up and running fairly quickly.”

Hampton says while incidents like this don’t happen frequently, they do sometimes occur.

“That’s why we’ve got canines out working on the system, and we’re able to usually clear them quite quickly.”

He says suspicious packages can be anything that looks out of place, or stands out.

“There is no specific for suspicious baggage and it’s really going to depend on people that see something that is suspicious to them, so we get all sorts of reports.”
