The commute for UBC students from Surrey will get a whole lot easier as the university plans to expand its campus south of the Fraser River.
The university has purchased a $70-million property at King George and Fraser highways which will be turned into a new campus. This is a 135,000 sq ft property that’s currently known as the Grace Hanin Community Church.

The UBC site will also be home to residential and commercial elements (eg. SkyTrain, Surrey Memorial Hospital) to help pay for the academic buildings.
Nearly 3,500 students and 750 staff members currently live in Surrey.
Consultation will begin next year with people in Surrey and Fraser Valley communities, as well as Indigenous leaders.
This marks the first major expansion by UBC since it set up a campus in the Okanagan in 2005.
