Fundraiser set up for little girl who lost parents in Highway 99 mudslide near Lillooet

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help support a two-year-old girl who lost both her parents in the mudslide that hit Highway 99 between Pemberton and Lillooet earlier this week.

According to the fundraiser, Anita and Mirsad Hadzic were high school sweethearts. They died on Monday while they were on their way home from a weekend getaway at a resort in the Okanagan.

Reports suggest the couple had been forced to take Highway 99 because other roads had been washed out or shut down by mudslides.

“Anita and Mirsad were the most wonderful parents. They were kind, hardworking and loved by so many,” reads the GoFundMe page.

“Many have reached out since the news of their passing with intentions to help out with donations for their daughter. I have started this fund with the blessings of both of the families to help save for her education and her future,” the person behind the fundraiser wrote.

They recalled the couple’s immense love for one another, saying “I remember [Anita] telling me they couldn’t stand being apart,” adding “they are now together for all eternity.”

The person says the little girl is being cared for by family members, and that “the memory of her parents will live on through them and her.”

“Please hold your loved ones and let them know how much you love them, life is more fragile than we can imagine.”

The goal is to raise $25,000 for the child, with many already contributing just less than a day after the page was launched.

The Hadzic couple are two of four people who have been killed in the Highway 99 mudslide.

On Saturday, the RCMP confirmed the bodies of three men were recovered this week while crews searched the Duffey Lake area after the slide, which hit on Monday. All three men were confirmed to be missing days prior.

The body of a woman was recovered earlier this week. A fifth person remains unaccounted for.
