B.C. extends state of emergency, flood recovery

The province will be extending the provincial state of emergency to January 11.

The emergency was declared on November 17 in response to severe weather, landslides, and flooding across the province.

Although recovery efforts have been underway, Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General says there is still more work to be done.

“While significant progress has been made in recovery and repair efforts, there is still more to do to reopen our highways and get people back into their homes.”

According to a release from the province, travel restrictions on highways 5 and 99 will remain in place.

“Repairs to our highway infrastructure are progressing well. However, with winter conditions here and more work to do, some restrictions must remain in place,” says Farnworth in the release.

The extended state of emergency allows the provincial government “the ability to use extraordinary powers to protect people and communities.”
