Vancouver makes drinking in public plazas permanent summer program

Vancouver City Council has approved public drinking as a permanent program in six plazas around the city this summer.

Alcohol consumption is permitted from June 15 to Oct. 16 at the following locations:

  • Cambie St and 17th Ave
  • Granville St and 13th Ave
  • Granville St and 14th Ave
  • Maple St and 4th Ave
  • Main St and 21st Ave
  • Lot 19 (855 W Hastings St)

According to the city, the plazas will operate from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“To the many people like me who do not have access to a backyard or private outdoor space, these plazas give us all a chance connect and socialize with one another while enjoying a drink outside,” said Mayor Kennedy Stewart.

For the past two summers, Vancouverites were able to enjoy alcohol in designated plazas as part of a pilot program.

Similarly, the Alcohol in Parks Pilot Program is still underway at 22 different parks between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m., seven days a week.

The city implemented the public drinking programs in response to the pandemic as a way to support businesses, and increase limited options to go out at the beginning of the health crisis.
