Burnaby gang shooting leaves 18-year-old dead, 1 injured: RCMP

The RCMP has released the name of an 18-year-old killed in a targeted gang shooting in Burnaby Saturday.

It happened around 2:30 p.m. on the Trans-Canada Highway, near the Kensington overpass.

Police say a man called 9-1-1 after his vehicle was shot and the passenger was killed.

Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation and they say they believe the shooting is connected to the “Lower Mainland Gang Conflict.”

RCMP identified the victim as Meysam Zaki.

“We are releasing Mr. Zaki’s name in hopes that witnesses will come forward who can assist us in building a timeline of his whereabouts in the time leading to his death,” said Sgt. Timothy Pierotti of IHIT. “Any associates of Mr. Zaki or the second victim are urged to speak with police.  IHIT is committed to bring justice for this young man’s family.”

The driver was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

At around 4:30 p.m., RCMP got a call of a vehicle on fire near Parker Street and Eastlawn Drive, near Beecher Park.

IHIT believes this vehicle, a black Mercedes SUV, to be linked to the homicide.
