New Westminster’s Massey Theatre to receive more than $14 million in upgrades

The Massey Theatre in New Westminster will be undergoing some major upgrades over the next few years.

The City of New Westminster announced Tuesday it’s going ahead with the planned renovation of the Massey Theatre Complex.

The more than 83,000-square-foot space will be renovated through a shared investment with the Massey Theatre Society, the city’s operating partner.

Upgrades to the current building will include enhancements to meet modern safety and accessibility requirements, as well as improvements to ancillary rooms that will be repurposed for arts, cultural, and community activities.

“After taking over ownership of the Massey Theatre Complex last year, the City of New Westminster is excited to move ahead with renovations,” said Mayor Jonathan Coté. “The Massey Theatre renovations are an important component of advancing the city’s priorities and long-standing commitment to support the performing arts.”

The decision to renovate is consistent with plans developed in 2015 when the Ministry of Education and New Westminster School District discussed transferring ownership of the Massey Theatre to the city.

The Massey Theatre Complex’s North Wing, which houses the former New Westminster Secondary School cafeteria, gym, and dance studio, will be demolished during the renovation. The city will keep the land occupied by the north wing for future civic priorities.

Construction is scheduled to start in 2024, and take about two years to complete.
