Filmmaker Mani Amar killed in dispute between Surrey neighbours

Forty-year-old filmmaker Manbir “Mani” Amar has been identified by police as the victim of a homicide in Surrey Wednesday.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in after what police describe as an “altercation between two Surrey neighbours.”
Surrey RCMP was called to 61 Avenue near 141 Street in South Newton after reports of a fight between two men.

In a release Thursday, IHIT said police found a man in medical distress, and “despite best efforts, the victim’s condition deteriorated rapidly and he succumbed to his injuries on scene.”
IHIT says a suspect was located on the scene by Mounties and was arrested for murder.
“At this time, no charges have been laid and the suspect remains in custody,” IHIT said.

“This was an isolated incident between two neighbours,” Sgt. Timothy Pierotti of IHIT said. “Tragically this situation escalated to a point where a life was taken.”
Friends of Amar are mourning the loss and remembering his life. On Twitter, CEO of KidsPlay Youth Foundation and police officer, Kal Dosanjh says the community has experienced a “significant loss.”
“Mani was a caring individual, who had gone to extraordinary lengths to keep youth away from a life of drugs, gangs and crime. Rest In Peace my friend,” he wrote on Twitter.
Amar had produced and directed films which centred around the South Asian and Downtown Eastside communities in Vancouver.
