Man dead, woman hospitalized after being shot by police near Keremeos

A man is dead and a woman is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being shot by police Tuesday morning, according to RCMP.

Mounties were attempting to arrest the pair for outstanding warrants along Highway 3 near Keremeos, RCMP said in a news release.

While trying to “enforce” the warrants the man allegedly pulled out a weapon and was shot by police. The incident transpired, and as a result, the woman was also shot, police said.

“Due to potential dangers at the location, the BC RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit has been contacted and will be attending the scene. The area has been cordoned off and secured,” RCMP added.

RCMP says they have notified the Independent Investigations Office (IO) and the actions of police are now under investigation.

No further information will be released by police.

A portion of Highway 3 west of Keremeos was closed for several hours due to a “police incident,” according to Drive BC. It reopened around noon Tuesday.
