Incumbent Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart along with his Forward Together team announced a plan Tuesday that would see 220,000 new homes built in the city over the next 10 years if he is re-elected next month.
It is just one of the promises in the unveiling of Stewart’s five-point housing plan.
More than half of the proposed homes would be market rental, below-market rental, social housing, and co-ops.
“This is triple the current Vancouver housing strategy targets,” Stewart said in a prepared statement Tuesday.

He also pledged to maintain the empty homes tax at least five per cent.
“And we will re-focus revenues on providing homes for women and children, including those fleeing violence.”
Another promise from Stewart is to reform the public hearing and permitting process to be more effective and inclusive, as well as to establish the toughest renter protections in the country.
“Forward Together’s housing plan is the most ambitious in our city’s history,” said Stewart in a news release.
“Ten years ago the city approved a mere 4,000 homes, most of them were luxury condos.”
“Last year we approved almost 9,000 new homes – the majority of which were market rental, below market rental, or social housing.”
The upcoming civic election is scheduled for Oct.15, 2022.
