PNE announces new roller coaster, ‘fastest of its kind in North America’

Vancouver's PNE announced it's building a new roller coaster in Playland, and says it will be the 'fastest of its kind in North America.'

Roller coaster enthusiasts will have another big reason to visit Playland in a couple of years, when the PNE’s newest attraction is set to open.

The PNE officials announced Friday morning that the park has “entered into an agreement to purchase the largest, single-ride investment in Playland’s history.”

The $9 million Zamperla ride will be “Canada’s fastest launch coaster,” the PNE says. It’s slated to open in the summer of 2024.

“Despite the financial effects of the COVID pandemic, the PNE has displayed its resiliency and innovation by not only surviving the pandemic, but by pivoting our business throughout it to emerge in a place to invest in this spectacular ride and into Playland’s future,” said PNE President and CEO Shelley Frost.

“We know that the new coaster will be an impressive addition to Playland’s ride roster and we are looking forward to introducing it to our guests in 2024.”

The new ride will sit where the Corkscrew Coaster used to be. Construction is set to begin next year.

The coaster will feature an opening tunnel, an 18 metre drop, airtime hills, helices, and sweeping turns. The track is going to be an estimated 380 metres, with a 1.3 G launch acceleration.

A name and theme for the ride are still being worked on.
