Man shot by police in Gastown, IIO called in

The Independent Investigations Office of BC has been notified of a police shooting in Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood.

According to the Vancouver Police Department, “several people” called 911 reporting a man assaulting passersby near Abbott Street and West Cordova Street just after 10 p.m. Monday.

Police say witnesses reported the man slapped a woman, assaulted a cyclist, and tried to attack someone walking in a group outside a Nester’s Market. The man is also said to have tried to start a fight near the Metropole Pub where he took out a weapon, police say.

The VPD says officers were joined by members of Metro Vancouver Transit Police when the man was found walking along Cambie Street. The man was then shot after a “confrontation” with officers, police say.
