A local diner in Kitsilano says it is closing its doors for a while after it was damaged in a fire Sunday night.
The Vancouver Fire Rescue Services says 35 firefighters responded to the blaze at Deacon’s Corner Diner at West Broadway and Trutch Street around 10:15 p.m.
“Crews arrived on scene to heavy smoke coming from the roof,” Assistant Chief Kane Morishita told CityNews.
Morishita says the flames were localized to one corner of the building, and investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
“The smoke was coming through the roof. So, we exposed the roof, but more than likely… that’s not the cause of origin, but that’s just where it seems to be the most fire,” he said.
In a post on Instagram, the diner says it will be closed until further notice.
“We are fortunate that no one was hurt and are so grateful to the emergency teams for their response and aid,” it said.
“Due to the damage, the restaurant will be closed until further notice. Deacon’s Gastown is still operating, so if you’re feeling like some good old comfort food, please do visit! As a small business, these kinds of situations hurt a lot, and we appreciate the help and support of our community as we figure out the next steps to rebuilding.”
