One person is dead after a shooting in Surrey’s Grandview Heights neighbourhood Monday night.
Surrey RCMP says it was initially called after reports of shots fired on 168th Street near 22 Avenue just before 8 p.m.
When officers arrived, they found a person dead in a parked vehicle who “appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds.”
Police say the investigation is in its early stages, and Mounties will be canvassing the area for witnesses.
A neighbour who lives in the area, who CityNews has agreed to remain anonymous, heard and saw the “flare” from the gunshot.

“It literally happened outside my building, and you could see that there was a vehicle [that] had to come to a brief stop, did a quick U-turn, and sped off,” he told CityNews. “It was quite interesting. I didn’t get to see the other vehicle, but you could clearly see that it was involved in what had just transpired.”
The shooting has left the man feeling unsettled, adding that considering he has family members who often come home late, he doesn’t feel safe anymore.
“In this neighbourhood, you don’t feel safe in the community. And it’s hard because you hear these gunshots more and more often now. So, you don’t know what to expect,” he said.
It’s not this neighbour’s first time seeing gunfire in the city, as just a few months ago while he was driving down 116th Avenue, he says he saw two cars shooting at each other.

“[We’re] starting to see this more as a common thing now, which I find just very disturbing. And … nothing’s really being done about it.”
A Surrey resident for about 15 years, this man says when he first moved, it was a small neighbourhood which has grown exponentially.
“There’s a lot more people, a lot more diversity, and it is more crowded, and it seems that the busier it gets, the more we’re seeing these things occur,” he said.
The Lower Mainland’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been called in.
Officers did not say whether this latest death is connected to the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict.
Police are urging anyone with information about the death to contact the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
