Fans of the spider sculpture underneath an East Vancouver overpass can rejoice, as the eight-legged work of art won’t be squashed for now.
Living under the Victoria Street overpass, the spider sculpture, called “Phobia,” showed up back in March of this year, much to the surprise of locals.

Vancouver city staff are moving to keep the sculpture on a temporary basis, according to Councillor Peter Meiszner.
In a tweet, Meiszner says they are looking to reach an agreement with the artist to let the sculpture stay where it is for up to six months.
“If your ‘spidey senses’ were tingling, it’s because I’ve got some good news to share on Spidey,” he said.
“The City has been working with its partners to discuss the best path forward for the installation and City staff are reaching out to the artist to discuss the option of keeping “Phobia” in place on a temporary basis.”

Based on the City’s review, staff have determined that it is safe and possible to leave “Phobia” in place on a temporary basis up to 6 months, subject to reaching an agreement…
Made-up of recycled car parts, “Phobia” was designed by Montreal-based artist Junko Playtime.
Meiszner adds details of the agreement would cover the maintenance and eventual removal of the sculpture.
