Steven Bacon sentenced to life in prison for murder of 16-year-old Nanaimo girl

The man who plead guilty to the murder of 16-year-old Makayla Chang in 2017 is going to prison for life.

Steven Bacon was sentenced to life in prison without parole for 20 years in a Nanaimo courtroom Friday.

Chang was last seen on March 17 of 2017 in Nanaimo where she lived and went to school.

She was reported missing several days later.

Two months after her disappearance, police upgraded her case to a homicide investigation.

Bacon was arrested in New Brunswick in 2019 on unrelated charges, but he was later charged with first-degree murder in September of 2020 in relation to Chang’s death.

Last year, he plead guilty to second-degree murder.
