2 Vancouver fires leave hotel, restaurant damaged

It looks like fire crews in Vancouver were busy Saturday morning after two fires broke out in the city.

Assist. Chief of Operations Brad Hess with the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services (VFRS) says one fire broke out inside of a dumpster outside of the Sandman Hotel on West Georgia Street and Cambie Street.

“[The] first crews that arrived found large flames coming from a dumpster bin on the side of the building in the alley. The fire was up against the wall of the structure and started the exterior of the building on fire in a small area,” he said.

“Crews were able to quickly get some water on the fire itself and contain it, no idea what the cause is at this time, no report of injuries at this time, approximately 30 firefighters on-scene,” he said.

He says the exterior of the building is damaged, and investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.

Restaurant goes up in flames

Another fire broke out in the city Saturday morning, as Hess says a restaurant is now dealing with the aftermath of the flames.

He says crews were called to a building near Main Street and 30 Avenue.

“[Crews] found heavy flames coming out from the rear of the building and a detached shed was on fire as well,” Hess said.

He says the restaurant is heavily damaged and part of the roof also collapsed.

“Probably some smoke damage to the buildings beside it. No idea what the cause of that fire, fire investigators are on scene,” he said.

Hess adds no injuries were reported in this blaze either.
