CityNews Vancouver’s award in the Breaking News category was for on-air coverage of the devastating Christmas Eve bus crash, which left four people dead and dozens injured east of Merritt. The bus had been travelling from Kelowna to Vancouver when it rolled on the Highway 97C Okanagan Connector.
CityNews’ subsequent coverage of the fatal crash also led to a Continuing Coverage Regional Murrow win.
CityNews Vancouver was also recognized for best digital for its website — vancouver.citynews.ca — for its mix of breaking news, and in-depth and investigative news coverage. Some of the coverage that showcases the work the team does includes the July 2022 deadly shooting in Langley, a Lower Mainland family’s experience facing racism in minor hockey, a fatal crash that left several dead on Christmas Eve, the chaotic snowfall that created a mess of Metro Vancouver roadways, and concerns raised about the brown marmorated stink bug.
The fourth Murrow was awarded to CityNews Vancouver in the Feature Reporting category for a television piece around a New Westminster “book-matcher” who wants to make sure kids see themselves in the books they read. The story looks at how the woman promotes diverse representations of gender, race, and sexual identity in children’s literature, and why this kind of work is needed.
RTDNA finalist in five categories
In addition to the four Regional Murrow Awards, CityNews Vancouver has been named a finalist for five RTDNA awards in the Radio Newscast (Large Market), Excellence in Sports Reporting, Overall Excellence in Digital, Excellence in Editing (Large Market), and Feature News (Large Market) categories.
The RTDNA regional awards winners are set to be announced on June 15.
CityNews Vancouver would like to thank you, our audience, for letting us tell the stories that matter to you.
